Privacy notice
MeteorShowerCal collects almost nothing. This page says exactly what "almost" means.
If you never sign up for alerts
Nothing about you is stored. No account, no cookie for identification, no local storage, no fingerprinting, no third-party tags.
To answer "is tonight worth it where you are", the server reads the
approximate location that Cloudflare attaches to your request at the edge
— roughly city-level, derived from your IP address. It is used to compute
the answer and is not written to any database or log by
this site. If you would rather not use it at all, pass explicit coordinates
in the URL instead: /tonight/?lat=22.28&lon=114.17.
If you sign up for peak alerts
Three things are stored, and only these three:
- Your email address, so the alert can be sent.
- Coordinates rounded to two decimal places — about a kilometre. That is precise enough to compute a radiant altitude and pull the right cloud forecast, and too coarse to identify an address. Rounding happens before the value is written, so the precise figure is never stored. This field is optional; untick the box on the form and you will get peak dates without a location.
- Your time zone, so "tonight" means your tonight rather than UTC.
No name, no IP address against your subscription, no browsing history, no open or click tracking beyond what the sending provider records to deliver the message.
Confirmation and unsubscribing
- Sign-up is double opt-in. Nothing is sent to you until you click the link in the confirmation email. Unconfirmed addresses are never added to the sending pool and are deleted after 30 days.
-
Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link and the standard
List-Unsubscribeheaders, so your mail client's own unsubscribe button works too. - Unsubscribing deletes the record. It is not flagged as inactive and kept.
- You will get at most two emails per shower per year: one about a week before a peak, and one on the evening itself. If the verdict for your location that night is poor, the second email is replaced by one naming the next good night — the same suppression logic the site uses, applied to your inbox.
Analytics
Aggregate page-view analytics are collected through Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and does not fingerprint visitors. It records the page, the referrer, the country and the browser family, and nothing that identifies a person. No Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no session recording.
Advertising and affiliate links
There are currently no affiliate links and no advertising anywhere on this site.
If either is ever introduced, these rules apply and are worth holding us
to: any page carrying a paid or commission-earning link will say so
visibly, above the link and not in a footer; every such link will carry
both the sponsored and nofollow link relations so
that search engines are told it is paid; and this notice will be updated
before the first link goes live rather than after. No verdict, rate or
recommendation on this site will ever depend on whether a link earns
anything.
Who else sees your data
- Cloudflare hosts the site and processes requests at the edge, and stores the subscriber records.
- The email delivery provider receives your address in order to deliver the alert.
- Weather providers receive a coordinate rounded to a 0.1° grid — about 11 km — with no identifier attached to it. They cannot link a query to a person, and neither can we.
Nothing is sold, rented or shared for marketing purposes.
Your rights
Email contact@meteorshowercal.com from the address you subscribed with to see, correct, export or delete what is held. Because the stored record is an email address, two decimal places of latitude and longitude, and a time zone, this is usually a one-line answer. Deletion is immediate and not reversible.
Children
The site is not directed at children and no alert sign-up should be made by anyone under 13. If you believe a child has subscribed, email the address above and the record will be deleted.
Changes
Material changes to this notice — in particular the introduction of advertising or affiliate links, or any new category of stored data — will be published here before they take effect. Subscribers will be told by email if what is stored about them changes.
